As spring kicks into full swing, the creative spirit is stirring everywhere. We profile emerging shoe designer Chrissie Morris, who incorporates semi-precious stones and stingray skins into her footwear, and dig into the rich backstory of Virginia-based label Nostalgie. We continue to track fashion developments Down Under with a look at Bassike’s casual chic, and we detail an innovative marketing campaign coordinated by luxe Brazilian retailer Daslu. Finally, we chat with Behance founder Scott Belsky about how his site fuels creatives’ productivity. [ link ]
David Gensler in New York

I have mixed feelings about living in New York. I love it most of the time. It is hard in the winter - cold and grey and dead. The spring is nice, but Spring is nice everywhere. Summer is horrible. The city sucks up the heat and mid summer, everything feels like an oven. What I do love is the random “NewYorkness” - this is the ever changing state of random sounds and images that you could run into at any moment. These sounds and images are often extremely unusual. I once saw a pot hole filled with 9 giant rats. I don’t have a picture as proof, so I guess this will remain a “NY Fish Story”, but I swear it was real. The other night after a long walk around the city I entered the NQR at Times Square. I got chance to see a few hundred MTA workers taking a break from repairing the tracks. It was a pretty amazing sight. There was at least 100 to 150 workers just sitting on the tracks eating lunch. It is a pretty rare sight to see this many people on the tracks. They were replacing the concrete supports that brace the tracks. Nothing crazy, nothing fancy. Just another random day in New York City.

The Predator and the Sling Shot [ David Gensler & KDU in Africa ]

Traveling the world is my passion. I love design, history, strategy, business, arts… I love the things that make us different and the things that make us all the same. I am about to post pics from Africa. Here is an advance look. This is a set of hand made sling shots i purchased from a young man in Blantyre, Malawi. He had hand made them himself for hunting. When I was a young boy growing up in the mountains and fields of eastern, Pennsylvania - I had many sling shots. One time when I was in 5th grade I was almost killed when a friend had accidentally struck me in the head with a stone. I was standing within 2 feet of him when he released the stone. The impact was brutal and the force took me off my feet. This incident took place near a public pool. I can recall waking up laying on my back in the creek we had been playing in, the shouts of the people were loud enough to wake the dead. Luckily, I was not dead - but I did get knocked out cold. My friend became scared he had killed me and ran home. I casually picked myself up, hoped on my Schwinn Predator BMX bike… and road straight home. I was unaware of the blood that was pouring down my face. In the end, I needed 5 stitches. I remember the needle was more painful than the stone. It burned like liquid fire. I still have the scar on my forehead to this day.
The great part of this story is the price the young man wanted for the sling shots. I had purchased a dozen hand carved items from him, beautiful pieces, none exceeding $15. The Sling shots $20 each. Dry rotted rubber. I asked why so much? his answer, “you cant hunt with the rest of that stuff”. The high price of utility!! I caved in and paid the price.
KDU in Arizona Ghost Town - Chloride

Chloride, Arizona. www.chlorideaz.com
I have been going to Magic every year for over ten years. In February 2007, I decided to get out of town and explore the wide open, sun baked nothingness of the Arizona desert. Roughly three hours from downtown Vegas - heading due east, past the Hoover damn and far away from almost anything resembling modernity, sits Chloride. Part Ghost Town, Part Mining town, part living art project, this place is forgotten.

Things seem honest in the desert. The sun and the void demand the truth. There are less places for lies to hide, yet everything seems to hold secrets. The conditions are harsh and unforgiving. Roads lead no where. There as one bar, a post office and one store that sold Christmas supplies. Metals and are weathered and eaten alive by the wind and time. The textures and colors here dont appear in trend reports or fashion mags. They are honest and exist only to serve themselves. The architecture seemed to organically grow from the remains of anything that wandered into Chloride. Everything seemed both lost and perfectly placed.

If the Devil lives in Vegas - God vacations in Chloride.
